Property of the Meffre family since 1946, Chateau Saint-Jean is planted almost entirely of Grenache, which is perfectly suited for the soil conditions on their particular vineyards. Ultra low yields, 40+ year old vines, certified organic farming and minimally inverventionist winemaking produce a truly exceptional Chateaufeuf du Pape here.

In our opinion, this property is poised to become a true super star in the appellation. Wine Spectator shares our opinion, raving about the 2005: "Nice racy fruit--blackberry, plum and currant--is layered with notes of tobacco, dark licorice and sweet earth. The rich finish has solid grip. Drink now through 2022. 900 cases made."

A blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, this wine possesses a brooding intensity with copious amounts of dark fruit braced by a roasted, slightly earthly element and a touch of white pepper spice. After 18+ months of aging, 2005 Chateau Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape was only very lightly filtered prior to bottling, further enhancing the truly incredible richness and density this wine possesses. Ready to drink young, the wine will evolve gracefully over the next decade. Enjoy with grilled meats, game, roasts, sausages, lamb as well as spicier cuisine.
