Few will argue that as far as domestic Pinot Noirs go, Oregon has a substantially greater number of super star contributors than California, at least to date. Sadly, much of what comes out of Oregon at the high end is either $55+ per bottle or simply not available, as it sells out within weeks of release to a priviledged few. Enter Yamhill Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir Reserve 2005:

For just under $30 per bottle by the case, 2005 Yamhill Valley Vineyards Reserve Pinot Noir did EXTREMELY well in a recent Consensul Panel tasting against other Oregon Pinot Noirs priced substantially higher. In our opinion, Yamhill's 2003 Reserve is a "top 5" of the vintage product at any price, period.

Dense and ageworthy, it shows copies amounts of dark fruit intermingled with just a touch of earth & spice. Winemaker Stephen Cary writes: "As is typical of Pinots from the recently recognized McMinnville AVA, and certainly true of our wines, this Reserve is robust and structured. It has lots of sweet, dark fruit and mocha character but also the acid and tannin to give it spark and help it live a relatively long life. It is youthful enough at this time (Jan 2006) that I would suggest, for at least the next year, an aeration decanting."
