Vina Alarba Old Vines Grenache is an incredible value in big red wine from the Calatayud appellation within the Aragon region of northeast Spain. It is a beautiful expression of the Grenache varietal, drawn from vineyards over 50 years old. The vineyards' high elevation (2500 ft) and dry climate create perfect conditions for producing a wine of considerable depth and finesse. Imported by Jorge Ordoņez, this Spanish red was given a 90-point rating for the 2004 vintage by Robert Parker, calling it "a ridiculously priced bargain...almost too good to be true." We tasted the 2005 and believe it is a wonderful vintage.

Vina Alarba Old Vines Grenache is deep ruby/purple in color with a nose of cherries, plums, raspberries, licorice and mineral notes. Full-bodied with bright acidity and light tannins, the wine offers ripe, fruit-forward flavors of cherry, raspberry, white pepper, licorice and spice. It is well balanced to enjoy now and over the next 3-4 years. The finish is smooth and rich with a hint of white pepper and spice.
