Poças, you ask? Indeed, Poças is quite well known throughout Europe, although it has unquestionably been in the shadow of port houses with a more international presence here in the US. Well-respected Port critic Roy Hersh, author of "For the Love of Port", in an early glimps of the 2003, writes: "2003 Poças – grapes hail from 50 year old vines. Tightly wound aromatics that needed most of an entire day to offer up some dark berry fruit, black pepper and spice. Poças is full bodied yet silky smooth on the palate with a very approachable, sweet candied violet flavor on the entry. A well-structured young Port designed for long term cellaring....long-lived finish that shows a dose of youthful alcohol. 92 points"

Poças was founded in 1918 by Manoel Domingues Poças Junior, with Port Wine being the main purpose of trade. By this time,there were more than 150 Companies of Port Wine in Vila Nova de Gaia, with their cellars placed on the left bank of the river Douro, just in front of the town of Oporto. These Houses belonged to Portuguese, English, Dutch, French, German and Spanish Families.

Nowadays everything is quite different: There are 53 traditional Companies in Vila Nova de Gaia that make up a part of about 25 Groups. A mere seven of these Groups are Portuguese, family owned and independent Companies. POÇAS' House is one of them. Enjoy the difference small scale, family-owned production makes!
