2001 Le Prieure de Saint Jean de Bebian, you ask? Want to make certain the vintage is NOT a typo and you're indeed ordering what many consider THE benchmark vintage for this property? Languedoc wine simply doesn't get any better than this; one might even argue that the Rhone Valley would be hard pressed to outdo the monumental effort produced at Saint Jean de Bebian, particularly in the stunning 2001 vintage! Bettane & Desseauve, highly respected French wine critics, called this wine "complete and profound" in their 2005 annual review guide!

Founded in the 1st century by a Roman legionnaire named Marcus Poblicius, under the emperor Augustus, Prieuré de Saint Jean de Bébian is one of the oldest vineyard sites in France. This property is on a historic plot that can trace its past even back beyond the monks who founded the priory here in the 11th Century to the Romans and Greeks.

The Roux family, owner from the mid 1950s to 1994, is responsible for the old vines that are now the framework of the current wines. In 1994, the Prieuré de Saint-Jean-de-Bébian was purchased by Chantal Lecouty, wine journalist, and Jean-Claude Le Brun, both former managers of the Revue du Vin de France, who are continuing the work started by Alain Roux: the production of premium Mediterranean wines.

The vineyard is planted to Syrah, Grenache (3 hectares planted in 1925), Mourvedre, plus what creates the Bebian distinction, a large plot planted “en foule” with 13 grape-varieties of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, including the aforementioned varietals. The average age of the vines is substantial, surpassing 25. The story goes that the Syrah vines came from Chave, the Mourvedre from Bandol’s Tempier and the ‘foulle’ from Rayas. Talk about a who’s who. The blend in the bottle is roughly half Grenache with some beefy Syrah and Mourvedre making their presence felt.

2001 Le Prieure de St. Jean de Bebian does not club you with thick one dimensional fruit. This one is all about nuances. The Wine Advocate raved about he 1998 vintage, awarding it 91 points: "On the palate, this highly expressive, medium to full-bodied, powerful wine has layers and layers of impressively intense, dark fruit flavors..." The 2001, too, has plenty of volume, but much of the impression revolves around the dried herb, spice, leather, and oak all streaked through a melange of black and red fruits. Flavorful but rather elegant and aristocratic for this part of the world, its about style and complexity.

As stated earlier, for Prieure fans, the 2001 is still the benchmark, and we are delighted to present a library release here! A mere 20 cases are in our importers warehouse; order yours today!
