Kartauserhof is a powerhouse white wine producer, with top vineyard holdings in the Wachau. We've previously been duly impressed by his single vineyard Gruner Veltliners and Rieslings. Interested in making as natural a product as feasible, proprietor Karl Stierschneider practices minimally interventionist winemaking, letting the outstanding terroir of his extraordinary vineyard holdings speak for itself.

Decimo 2003, an unusual blend of Zweigelt and Pinot Noir, is no less stunning than Stierschneider's white wines--arguably the best red wine we've tasted from the Wachau, period. A mere 150 cases were produced in the extraordinarily ripe 2003 vintage.

This is a great BBQ wine, but also well suited to more formal dishes one would normally pair with a big Pinot Noir. If you're looking for an unusual spin on Pinot Noir or wish that Pinot Noir offered just a touch of extra body or nuances, this is a wine not to be missed.
