Simonsberg-Paarl, South Africa

This is NOT your run-of-the-mill Merlot. More right bank Bordeaux but riper, this is one impressive rendition of the varietal!

2003 Anura Reserve Merlot is bursting with ripe blackberry, red berry and blackcurrant flavors. Hints of herbal and violet aromas are folded in layers of dark chocolate, creating an almost decadent experience. This full-bodied, well balanced wine and has a long, smooth, lingering flavor of berries and mint leaves. Enjoy with roasts, veal, roast vegetables, and soft cheeses.

Anura Vineyards is owned by Tymen and Jenny Bouma and their family. The farm is situated in Klapmuts, which is 47 km North-East of Cape Town. The Bouma family purchased the estate in 1989. For 10 years Tymen developed the farm from the original 2 blocks of vineyards into 120 hectares of vines, with a production potential of 800 tons. Until Anura's first own vintage in 2001, all grapes were sold to neighboring estates. Anura produces 2 ranges- Anura, the ultra-premium label meaning “Frog”, and Frog Hill, a high quality second tier label named after the historic “Padda Bult” found on the farm. The aim is to create wines which consistently reflect their origin and the unique characteristics of Anura, its terroir, and its people. Tymen believes that long term success is only possible if they create wines which are as individualistic as the people they make them for.

Positioned on the foothills on the Simonsberg Mountains, Anura enjoys a wide variety of soils, slopes and microclimates. This allows them to grow a wide selection of cultivars, some uncommon in South Africa, and to match each cultivar with its ideal soil and microclimate. In the vineyards, Tymen strives to match each varietal with the vineyard practices that best suit that particular varietal, including specific canopy management, controlling the yield, trellising the vines or leaving them to grow as bushes and irrigation control.

The grapes at Anura are harvested by hand at optimum ripeness. They are hand-sorted to ensure that only the best bunches are brought to the crushing phase. Careful attention is paid to each lot of grapes, based not only on the cultivar but also on the particular block concerned. Based on this, their cellar team decides on the type of crushing, yeast type, fermentation method and temperature, type of wood for fermentation and ageing as well as filtration method and a host of other factors in order to ensure that the character of each lot of grapes is carried through to the bottle.

At Anura, the aim is to produce wines of individual character which combine the robust fruit of the New World with the elegance and complexity of the Old World. With each passing harvest they learn more about the soils and vineyards and refine their vineyard and cellar practices in order to better achieve their ideal style of wine.

Anura believes that a healthy socio-economic environment is essential if they are to build and maintain a strong business. They are therefore very proud to be in partnership with the Black Economic Empowerment. Not only will this give them the stability to build their business in the new South Africa, it will also assist in achieving the socio-economic balance and stability within South Africa by giving previously disadvantaged people a real share in their economic growth.
