Gambero Rosso, THE most respected guide on Italian wines, writes about the 2001 Ascheri Barolo Sorano: "The Barolo Sorano shows forest floor, blueberries and currants mingling with leather and cocoa powder, giving the lie to those who claim large wood does not produce sweet, balanced tannins. It is true to type, velvet-smooth and very long." Once again, quite a compliment for what we deem to be a producer at the VERY top of his game!

Ascheri Sorano Barolo is one of two lots of Barolo made by Matteo Ascheri in his tiny 4-hectare vineyard. This full-bodied dry red was aged for 12 to 24 months in large Slovenian oak barrels. It will improve with age over the next 10 years and remain drinkable for at least 25. This wine is for serious collectors of great Northern Italian classics.

2001 Sorano is a nearly perfect amalgam of traditional and modern wine making from a perennial “3 Glasses” Gambero Rosso winner, the highest rating attainable in Italy’s most respected wine magazine and a rating only bestowed on a handful of Barolos each vintage.

Ascheri Sorano Barolo is dark ruby red in color with a nose of plums, blackberries and anisette. Full-bodied with silky tannins and rich flavors of plums, berries, spice and vanilla, it is beautifully balanced to enjoy over the next 25 years. The finish shows finesse and length. Decanter raved in early 2006: "Subtle, floral, elegant fruit. A winner...both fruit and structure hinting at future greatness."
